Community Spotlight #3
This is the third in our series where we share articles from the community. I’ve spent this week working on content for the blog. Which is launching on September 1st. Here is a preview of some of the titles.
When You Feel Overwhelmed Do the Plan
Busting Common SEO Myths With the Worst Advice That Works
Making Mistakes and Maximizing Your Blogging Efforts
This is what you wrote this week.
From Sarah Rainsberger, we have this article about writing technical docs. I liked this tip on writing about how people can succeed. One rule I gave myself for my blog was not to write headlines like “avoid these mistakes.” I’d rather tell people what they can do right instead. Why focus on the negative.
Ananya Dash rounded up several science communication articles. I like the ones about how pregnancy changes the brain and plant resilience.
Here are some interesting reads.
My Failed Personal Site Redesign by Jim Nielsen
One important thing is to build in public. This is why I created my website at Suzza.dev. It documents all my failures in creating my website with the Astro framework. There is a lot to learn from failure. I like to write about the importance of making mistakes.
Google’s Mixed Messages: Does Googlebot Really “Follow” Links? by Matt G. Southern
Well, all that SEO advice on how Google follows links is a lie. The crawler goes about navigating pages by their links. That isn’t how it discovers content. Instead, Googlebot gathers links to analyze later. Interesting to read with some surprising information about Google Search.
5 Ways to Search a Website for Keywords (+ Examples) by Kate Starr
This is a good skill to have. This article goes in-depth on how to search websites for keywords. I do this all the time by using “site:” in Google Search. For example, putting “site:beautyofmathematics.com” will show me what pages are indexed for that website. I can even add keywords like “site:beautyofmathematics.com annotated Numberphile” which bring up all the posts in my Annotated Numberphile series. Search any competitor’s website this way.
That’s all for now, see you next week!
